OUR CHILDREN HAVE A RICH CURRICULUM

We have high expectations for our children through our curriculum that is coherently planned and sequenced towards acquiring cumulative knowledge and skills to ensure broad coverage and progression.

Integral to the success and the engagement of our children, is the richness of our curriculum which is enhanced by immersive activities, experiences and extra-curricular opportunities. These include:

  • Themed days which allow children to immerse themselves in a topic
  • 'Life Skills' days once a fortnight per year group
  • Residential and educational trips which bring to life classroom learning and develop team building
  • Visits from musicians, historians and artists, which brings expertise into the classroom
  • A wide variety of sports and activity clubs before, during and after school hours, which take into account children’s physical and mental wellbeing.
  • Purposeful wrap-around care provided by our extended school provision.

    AT CHRIST CHURCH, WE READ

At Christ Church, we aim to build a love of reading from the moment children start school through immersing children in quality texts as part of the curriculum offer and there is an expectation that all children read and are read to daily.

We equip our children with phonics knowledge they need through the delivery of Sounds Write and develop language comprehension through book talk. This allows our children to access and engage with all elements of our broad and balanced curriculum.

Throughout Key Stage 2, this is built on through our bespoke version of daily Destination Reader sessions and personalised reading approach to ensure children are reading books to develop fluency and at the appropriate level for comprehension.

Each classroom has a well-resourced and appealing book corner which is supplemented by our school library to promote reading. We have pupils who apply for jobs as librarians in order to help organise our library. They are keen to share book reviews, competitions and promotional work. Our librarians are representatives from each year group and help us purchase up to date fiction and non-fiction.

WE ENSURE A CURRICULUM FOR ALL

Christ Church provides a highly inclusive environment where children, of all abilities, are supported to flourish and achieve their full potential:

    • To ensure we continue to meet the needs of our pupils, we contributed to a Trust wide working group last year which explored adaptive Practice across the Whole curriculum. We are embedding this and fully utilising tools and ideas to strengthen our practice.
    • Subject leaders play an active part in the success of the curriculum by leading a regular programme of monitoring, evaluation and review.
    • Our curriculum design ensures that the needs of individual and small groups of children are being met within an environment of high quality first teaching, supported by targeted interventions, where needed.
    • Teachers adapt lessons to meet the needs of all children, identifying misconceptions where they arise and providing feedback.
    • Our outstanding pastoral team, led by our SENCo, enable our children to flourish educationally, socially and emotionally in a nurturing environment that meets their diverse needs.

Our Christ Church Creative Curriculum Offer...

We are committed to achieving the very best possible outcomes for all our pupils, many of whom face significant barriers and challenges in their young lives. Through consultation, we are acutely aware that we need to promote our children’s physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

With our strong Christian ethos woven through all that we do, we are relentless and uncompromising for them. We recognise that they deserve committed, hardworking and creative teachers. Our teachers support, encourage and enable them overcome any barriers and reach their God given potential, irrespective of starting points. Through promoting high expectations, we aim to raise their aspirations and share their experiences with parents and carers.

Our curriculum, in reflecting the needs of our community, is ambitious and designed to give all learners the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life. We want all of them to be able to take the opportunity to ‘Sail the Seven Seas’ and be resourceful and resilient enough to overcome the challenges that they will face.

    Our 7 C’s are:

    Creativity

Our curriculum aims to be exciting and engaging, enabling children to explore and experience a broad and balanced range of subjects, whilst ensuring coverage and progression in each subject. We value children’s creativity and enable them to express this across the curriculum, especially through the arts. In addition to this we are committed to offering all children a range of opportunities to learn outdoors and experientially, both on and off site.

    Curiosity

Our curriculum aims to tap into children’s natural curiosity by making learning memorable. We achieve this through Stunning Starters and Fantastic Finishes, inspiring awe and wonder with well-planned visitors and visits in order to embed life-long learning skills.

    Cross-curricular learning

Our curriculum recognises the importance of giving our children transferable skills through cross-curricular learning. Our focus on metacognition is evident in all that we do, encouraging persistence, resilience, independence, reflection and risk taking.

    Challenge

Our curriculum aims to challenge children at all levels to achieve their God given potential. By providing opportunities for children to explore ways to become active, informed and engaged citizens, we enable children to make healthy lifestyle choices.

    Collaboration

Our curriculum aims to foster collaboration between children, families and our wider community. Our diversity is a significant feature and we celebrate this through establishing meaningful links, both locally and globally.

    Communication

Our curriculum recognises the need for every child at Christ Church to experience a language rich environment, where everybody’s voice is valued. Through this we emphasise our Golden Rules which place great emphasis on the respect we show ourselves and others.

    ‘Can do’ approach to learning

Our curriculum aims to give children the skills, knowledge and confidence to feel safe and take risks in their learning. We recognise the power of reflecting on and learning from mistakes.
