ORACY
At Christ Church we focus on children's oracy skills right from when they join us. You will quickly find your child gains confidence and can't wait to tell you about their exciting learning experiences.
Oral language skills are vital in all areas of life and our curriculum ensures all children make progress in this area. It is important that all children have their voice heard and develop skills needed to express themselves.
It is integral to the curriculum here at Christ Church and also to children's confidence and wellbeing.
We firmly believe it is oracy that can unlock reading, writing and broader vocabulary needed for success in school and in life. Talking is an essential part of these processes.
We are learning to use a ‘public’ voice for speaking in front of our class, in assemblies, or other large audiences. We use a whispering voice for working with a partner in class or independently creating sentences when we are writing.
We are learning to:
- listen and respond appropriately to adults and their peers
- ask relevant questions to extend their understanding and knowledge
- use relevant strategies to build their vocabulary
- articulate and justify answers, arguments and opinions
- give well-structured descriptions, explanations and narratives for different purposes, including for expressing feelings
- maintain attention and participate actively in collaborative conversations, staying on topic and initiating and responding to comments
- use spoken language to develop understanding through speculating, hypothesising, imagining and exploring ideas
- speak audibly and fluently with an increasing command of Standard English
- participate in discussions, presentations, performances, role play, improvisations and debates
- gain, maintain and monitor the interest of the listener(s)
- consider and evaluate different viewpoints, attending to and building on the contributions of others
- select and use appropriate registers for effective communication.
QUALITY TEXTS
Our children explore a huge variety of quality texts by unique, significant authors as they move through our school. We follow the Talk for Writing approach which carefully plans writing from exciting texts, linking reading, writing and oracy effectively. Progress has been incredible!
